Warm weather brings reminder to change air filters

MADISON – Spring is finally here, but this week, it feels like summer. There are a few things that come with such a change in temperature: one of them, changing your air filter.

Because your air conditioning unit will be working overtime during warmer weather, more dirt and pollutants get drawn inside, which can affect the efficiency of air circulation. According to the Department of Energy, replacing a clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by anywhere from five to 15 percent.

If you can’t remember the last time you changed your filter, pull it out and hold it up to bright light. If no light is visible through the filter, you need a new one.

It’s a good idea to change the filters every few months to ensure efficient airflow. If you’re renting your home, you may be wondering if you or your landlord is responsible for changing them. Unfortunately, there’s not a simple yes or no answer; it depends on the rental company, your landlord, and ultimately, your lease. Read your rental agreement to see what the tenant is responsible for. Many times a landlord will be responsible for servicing an HVAC system, but require tenants to change the air filters.
